What's gone wrong then?

The Preamble to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts - Written by John Adams in 1779

The end of the institution, maintenance, and administration of government, is to secure the existence of the body politic, to protect it, and to furnish the individuals who compose it with the power of enjoying in safety and tranquility their natural rights, and the blessings of life: and whenever these great objects are not obtained, the people have a right to alter the government, and to take measures necessary for their safety, prosperity and happiness.

That is the first of three paragraphs...

Given that is the first paragraph of the state's constitution, the basis of all of their law, what is their problem?

Mass. Politicians have ignored the State Constitution and the State Judiciary hasn't set them straight.

Politicans violate their State Constitutions all the time. The laws either don't get challenged, or when they do the courts side with the politicians, effectively gutting the Constitution of all meaning.
